Valentine’s Day

There is a beautiful legend behind St Valentine’s Day. Saint Valentine lived in Rome in the third century AD. At that time the Emperor of Rome was Claudius. He wasn’t very popular because he was trying to get more and more people for his army. The men didn’t want to go to the army and Claudius thought that it was because they didn’t want to leave their wives and children. «If they don’t get married, they’ll join the army,» he thought and passed a law (закон) which banned (запретил) marriage.
Valentine was a Christian priest who didn’t like the new law. He secretly married people who were in love. One night the Emperor’s soldiers caught him and put him in prison. Valentine was going to die.
Many young people felt sorry for Valentine and visited him in prison. One of them was the daughter of a prison guard. On the day of his execution Valentine wrote a note to her and signed it «Love from your Valentine». This was on 14 February 269 AD.
Since then 14 February has been the Day of Love, when people send love letters and presents to each other. They don’t sign the cards with their names, but write «Gues.Who» or «Your Valentine».
At first this was a European tradition, but then it became popular in other countries. It came to Russia too, but a lot of people say, «If you love somebody, you should show it every day, not only one day a year.»

2 Greeting and beginning of the lesson.

T.: Good morning, everybody! I am glad to see you at our unusual lesson today! You’ve just heard a part of Snow White’s song from Walt Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. In this song is spoken about dreams of a young girl, who would like to find her love and to meet her prince.

I think this song is the good beginning for our topic about one of the best British winter holidays which young and old people love. Have you guessed this holiday? – Of course, you’re right. It is St. Valentine’s Day.

I have no doubt you’ve heard about this holiday and you know something about it. That’s why at first I suggest you to answer the questions of this quiz. ( On the blackboard) ( Слайд 4)

3 Listening and answering the questions.

T.: Thank you for your answers! Please listen to my story now and try to answer the questions of the quiz more fully!

St. Valentine’s Day, February 14, has been a customary day for choosing sweethearts and exchanging love-tokens from time immemorial.

St. Valentine’s Day is a religious holiday, which is celebrated in Great Britain, in the USA, in many European countries such as Italy, France, Germany, Denmark and others. St. Valentine’s Day has roots in several legends. And one of the early symbols of love is Cupid, the Roman God of Love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and arrow.

This is the legend of how St. Valentine’s Day began. Claudius II, who was Emperor in Rome at that time, made a law that no one could become engaged or get married. He was afraid if men had sweethearts or wives, they would not want to fight in wars. Now, a kindly priest named Valentine, seeing the love of young people (couples), married some secretly. When Emperor Claudius found out, he had Valentine put to death.

Even in prison, Valentine showed his love for everyone. His jailer had a young daughter who was blind. And by a miracle, Valentine restored her sight. Just before his death, on February 14, he sent her a farewell message signed “From your Valentine.”

There are many other legends about how Valentine’s Day started, and no one knows for sure whether any of them are true.

Let’s come back to our quiz!

The beginning of the letter.

Why do you like or don’t like this holiday?

Is St. Valentine’s Day popular in Russia? What do you think?

How do you usually spend this day?

The end of the letter.

T.: Let’s come back to our quiz again!

T.: Well done! We can answer all questions of our quiz. But don’t hurry up to put Julie’s letter on the side of your desks. I suggest you to do this task (true or false).

T.: Julie’s letter is very interesting and has much information. I want you to reply her. To write a letter to Julie will be your homework. Now let’s discuss the plan of your future letter. (Plan)

T.: And now we’ll go to London and we’ll look for the most romantic square – Piccadilly Circus. (Tasks: You are at the British Museum. / You are near Buckingham Palace.)

7 Checking up the lesson’s lexicon.

T.: Now I suggest you to learn the meaning of some words connected with St. Valentine’s Day.

8 Summing up and giving homework.

Many young people felt sorry for Valentine and visited him in prison. One of them was the daughter of a prison guard. On the day of his execution Valentine wrote a note to her and signed it “Love from your Valentine “. This was on 14 February 269 AD.

No one really knows the actual origin of Valentine’s Day. Many historians, however, seem to trace it to an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia. This was held on February 15 to honor Faunus, the god of animal life, hunting, herding, the patron of husbandry, and the guardian of the secret lore of nature. After Christianity spread, some think this pagan festival eventually became Valentine’s Day.

Other experts connect Valentine’s Day with two saints of the early Christian church. According to one story, St. Valentine’s was a priest who would marry young couples against the orders of the Roman Emperor Claudius 11, who believed that single young men made better soldiers. This story goes back to about A.D. 200.

There also was another St. Valentine who was a good friend to children. Because he would not worship the gods decreed by the Roman emperor, he was put in prison. While he was imprisoned, the children that he had befriended missed him and brought him loving notes. Many of the notes expressed the thought that «absence makes the heart grow fonder.» He was supposedly executed on February 14 in A.D. 270. Some people think this is why we exchange friendly and caring messages on this day.

Some people connect the celebrating of Valentine’s Day with an old English belief that birds choose their mates on February. This, too, possible, since spring was less than a month away. The calendar used before 1582 was slightly different from the one we use now. Spring arrived on March 11 on the old calendar.

Many old-fashioned Valentine’s Day customs involved ways single women could learn their future husbands might be. In England in the 1700s, women wrote men’s names on scraps of paper, rolled each in a ball of clay, and dropped them into water. The first paper that surfaced supposedly had the name of the woman’s true love.

The customs of sending valentine cards started in Europe in the 1700s. Commercial valentines were first made in the early 1800s. Kate Greenaway, a British artist, was one of the leading makers of valentines. Her valentines are known for her drawing of little children and the varied shades of blues and greens that she favored. Whatever the origin, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many parts of the world today and is a holiday for both young and old.

«This is the legend of how St. Valentine’s Day began. When the Roman emperor Claudius 11 needed soldiers, he made a law against marrying because he left that marriage made men want to stay at home instead of fighting wars. But at that time there was a kindly priest named Valentine. He couldn’t agree with the emperor’s decision. When he saw that young couples were truly in love, he married them secretly’.

My daughter! My son! I declare you husband and wife!

1: Priest, you have been discovered and condemned to death!

2: To prison! To Tower!

What a beautiful girl!

I’ll help her by working a miracle!

I’m so grateful to you. Even in prison you. Valentine, showed your love for everyone and restored my sight!

Unfortunately, tomorrow, on February, I am to die. But I ‘m scared and I want to tell everybody on earth, «I love you. I’m your Valentine” Голос из-за кулис: Just before his death, on February 14, he sent her a farewell message signed from your Valentine’.

Let’s have a fun and play.

We are divided into 2 teams and we are named them. «Romeo» is the name of the 1 st team. » Juliet» is the name of the 2 nd team.
